With the June sun kicking this growing season into high gear, we are diving into a role that we spent a lot of last year dipping our toes into. We have slowly become part of a network of fruit & veggie growers, chicken farmers, millers, cheese makers, ranchers, and bakers. This got us wondering, what part do we want to play in our local food web? We were only able to reach one conclusion - we are a food hub and we want to fully embrace it. Over the coming season we are going to be learning about this exciting task that we're taking on. As this new adventure unfolds we hope to share the story with y’all, the folks who are making it possible.
To help paint a picture, we want everyone to know what our day-to-day looks like right now in the world of connecting people to good food. On Mondays, we start our week off heading to La Montanita Cooperative Distribution Center, an essential resource where local farmers and artisans sell some of their goods wholesale. Here we pick up some of our Weekly Share items and stock up on our On the Side groceries.
On Tuesday mornings we pick up our bread and dough from Fano Bread Company and things like peas, tomatoes and garlic from Minor Morgan at North Valley Organics. In the afternoon, other local farmers, like Seth from Vida Verde and Alfonso from Silver Leaf Farms, drop off their harvest at our warehouse space. In the late afternoon, our volunteers arrive to help us pack the Shares. Wednesday sees all this food delivered to you, and Thursday and Friday we spend checking-in with our site champions, processing payments, and planning with farmers for the coming week.
